What Is Autocross?
Autocross is a timed motorsport competition where drivers navigate through a marked course laid out with traffic cones on a closed, paved surface. Unlike racing, it’s not about speed — it’s about precision, control, and handling. Drivers compete one at a time to achieve the fastest time without knocking over cones or going off-course.
Autocross is often considered the safest and most accessible form of motorsport, making it the perfect gateway for aspiring racers, young drivers, and anyone who wants to improve their driving skills in a controlled environment.
Why Autocross Matters in the Cayman Islands
At the Cayman Motoring Federation (CMF), we believe that developing a strong culture of driver education and vehicle control is essential for building safer roads. Autocross offers an exciting yet safe way to teach real-world driving techniques, including:
- Braking and acceleration control
- Emergency handling and spatial awareness
- Cornering skills and reaction time
- Respect for rules and discipline behind the wheel
This hands-on training directly supports our commitment to the #RoadToZero campaign, promoting zero road fatalities through education, community programs, and responsible motoring.
WHAT IS AN AUTOCROSS LEAGUE
The CMF 2026 Autocross League will be Cayman’s first structured national autocross championship—designed to promote driver skill, safety, and community participation through six (6) competitive events held from January to December 2026.
Each event will feature a timed slalom-style course focusing on precision and control, with points contributing toward an overall National Autocross Champion title.
League participation will be open to all licensed CMF National Autocross Drivers.
Key Elements of an Autocross League:
-
Season-Based Structure – A series of events (e.g., 4-6 races) held over several months.
-
Timed Competition Format – Drivers compete individually against the clock rather than head-to-head.
-
Temporary Technical Course – A course designed with cones in a large paved area such as a parking lot.
-
Points System – Drivers earn points at each round based on finishing position or time performance.
-
Overall League Champion – The driver with the highest cumulative points at the end of the season is crowned champion.
-
Vehicle Classification – Cars are grouped into classes (e.g., street, modified, novice) to ensure fair competition.
-
Driver Development Focus – Emphasis on car control, precision, and improving driving skill.
-
Safety-Centered Environment – One car on course at a time, minimizing risk.
-
Community Engagement – Encourages repeat participation and builds club loyalty.
-
Accessible Entry Point – Participants can typically compete in road-legal vehicles.
-
Pathway to Higher Motorsport – Provides progression into karting, rally, circuit racing, or other FIA disciplines.
-
Sustainable Club Model – Multi-event format supports sponsorship continuity and predictable revenue.
CMF’s six-race league format strengthens driver retention and creates a structured grassroots-to-elite development pathway aligned with FIA best practices.
