About STEM Racing

The Cayman Motoring Federation (CMF) is thrilled to announce the launch of the globally acclaimed STEM Racing programme in the Cayman Islands. Through this innovative initiative, CMF brings the excitement of Formula 1 racing into the classroom, empowering students with hands-on experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The STEM Racing launched in the UK (formally as F1 in Schools) and now spanning over 60 countries, goes beyond being a competition, it’s a transformative experience that helps students develop essential life skills such as teamwork, project management, and problem-solving. Acclaimed as the world’s biggest and most exciting STEM-based educational Project, STEM Racing is a multi-disciplinary challenge, in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, project-manage, design, analyse, manufacture, test and then race miniature compressed-gas powered F1 cars down a 20m track.

Objective

Empower, inspire and motivate students, changing lives around the world.

Vision

Bring to GEN Z an innovative & exciting stem challenge, which aims to be the only truly global educational programme that raises awareness of STEM, sustainability, equality, diversity & inclusion among students and schoolchildren in every region, country, and continent.

Mission

Spanning an age range of 9 to 19, our mission is to nurture talent & help change the perceptions of STEM by creating a fun and exciting learning environment. We are developing career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, project management and marketing communications through the magnetic appeal of formula 1.

It’s not just STEM

Students also learn about:

  • Project management
  • Business planning
  • Financial strategy
  • Budgeting
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Sponsorship and Marketing
  • Communication skills
  • Branding
  • Graphic identity
  • Media skills
  • International collaboration

WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?

Using 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software; students will design an F1 car of the future to the specifications set by the International Rules Committee.

Aerodynamics are analysed for drag co-efficiency in a virtual wind tunnel using Computational Fluid Dynamics Software (CFD).

Using 3D CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) software, the team evaluates the most efficient machining strategy to make the car.

Aerodynamics are tested in air trace visualization tunnels. Students can fine tune designs to optimise speed and drag co- efficiency.
